The Postal Museum Visits Glasgow Mail Centre and G1-5 / G21-22 Delivery Unit

CWU Glasgow & District Amal recently welcomed representatives from The Postal Museum to Glasgow Mail Centre and the G1-5 / G21-22 Delivery Unit as part of an initiative to celebrate and preserve the rich history of postal workers and the postal service.

Over two days, The Postal Museum visited multiple workplaces and shifts, including Glasgow Mail Centre and G1-5 / G21-22 Delivery Unit, giving colleagues the opportunity to explore a fascinating collection of postal artefacts, uniforms, badges, photographs, publications and memorabilia from across the history of the postal service.

The displays generated a great deal of interest among employees, with many taking time during their breaks to browse the exhibits, share memories of their own experiences in the job and discuss how the postal service has evolved over the decades. The visits also provided an opportunity for staff to learn more about the work of The Postal Museum and the importance of preserving the stories of postal workers for future generations.

The events attracted interest from employees across a range of shifts, including staff at Glasgow Mail Centre’s night operation, allowing workers from all parts of the business to engage with the exhibition and contribute their own experiences and memories.

Andrea Dumbrell from The Postal Museum said:

“It was great to spend time in Glasgow, listening to people’s memories and finding out about their experiences as postal workers. I’m hoping to visit other sites in Scotland in the future.”

The visits highlighted the important role postal workers have played in communities across the UK and provided an opportunity for current employees to connect with the history and heritage of the industry. Many colleagues were particularly interested in seeing historic uniforms, equipment and publications, which sparked conversations about how working practices, technology and the job itself have changed over the years.

CWU Glasgow & District Amal also used the events as an opportunity to engage with members, promote the benefits of union membership and showcase the work being carried out by the branch on behalf of postal workers across Glasgow and the surrounding areas.

Peter Knox, CWU Glasgow & District Amal Lead ULR and Regional ULR Lead for Scotland, said:

“It was fantastic to welcome The Postal Museum to Glasgow Mail Centre and G1-5 / G21-22 Delivery Unit. The displays attracted a lot of interest and gave colleagues a chance to reflect on the proud history of our industry. Postal workers have played a vital role in communities for generations, and it is important that this history is preserved and shared with future generations. We would like to thank The Postal Museum team for taking the time to visit our workplaces and engage with our members.”

CWU Glasgow & District Amal would like to thank Andrea Dumbrell and the Postal Museum team for their support and for bringing postal history directly into the workplace. The branch looks forward to working together on future initiatives that celebrate the contribution of postal workers and promote learning opportunities for members.
